During the 18th century in Venice, the nobility and Commanders\u00a0da Mar\u00a0(of the sea) wore sunglasses to protect their eyes from the glare of reflected light while navigating the waters of the lagoon or the open sea.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in history of eyeglasses, the exhibition\u00a0\u201cSpectacles Fit for a Doge\u201d gathers together spectacles from museums and private collections to trace a part of the history of eyeglasses and sunglasses.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with &#8220;bow&#8221; spectacles (without temples), the exhibition will then examine the first efforts made to stabilize glasses on the nose by the use of temples, a hinged stem connected to the rim. Other highlights are\u00a0<em>vetri da gondola\u00a0<\/em>or<em>\u00a0<\/em><em>da\u00a0dama\u00a0<\/em>(for ladies) which\u00a0were used by Venetian noblewomen when they rode in a gondola, and v<em>etri da avari<\/em>\u00a0(glasses for misers), colored optical illusion eyeglasses created just for entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Museo dell&#8217;Occhiale\u00a0in Pieve di Cadore (Belluno),\u00a0Museo Correr, and the\u00a0Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, in collaboration with the\u00a0Stazione Sperimentale del Vetro\u00a0in Murano, have all contributed to this scientific project, which not only focuses on rare and fascinating objects, but also the importance of safeguarding and protecting the eyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now to the Museo dell&#8217;Occhiale in Pieve di Cadore (Belluno)\u00a0\u00a0from 20 July\/28 September 2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Roberto Vascellari<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; \u00a0Occhiali da Doge,\u201cSpectacles Fit for a Doge\u201d \u00a0 Sunglasses in Eighteenth-Century Venice \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u201cNero princeps gladiatorum pugnas spectabat in smaragdo\u201d.
