“Optics in Italian Paintings from the Middle Ages” Series
This year’s microfiber celebrates the 68th anniversary of Urbano’s entry into eyewear production (Safilo, Calalzo di C., October 18, 1946).
The fresco in the “della Mattarella” church near Cappella Maggiore (TV) was painted in the late 1400s by Antonio Zago (Bergamo origins) and depicts one of the “Four Doctors of the Latin Church.” In detail, we see Saint Jerome with his symbols next to a cabinet surmounted by a lion with a halo indicating Saint Mark. Inside, we see glass vases and a pair of riveted spectacles with ribbons, a clear symbol of the Venetian Republic’s ownership of these objects.
